When growing live plants I always tried to make sure I left some swimming room but for some plecos they would actualy perfer a jammed pack tank of plants, this would be true for most shrimp.

I will move this is pico tanks per you choice

Be prepared to have some serious ammonia spike issues with 3 tetras in a 1-week-old tank that size. Stock up on amquel. There's no biofilter built up yet like you'd get with live rock, or even gravel from an established fw tank.

Amquel is an ammonia detoxifier. Good to have around for cycling emergencies. That and a quick, handy ammonia test kit. Petco carries some, but it'll probably cost more than your cool new tank. :( I don't intend to be mean or anything. I've been dealing with cycling issues in my guppy and tadpole tanks so I just wanted to be sure you were prepared in case the fish get stressed. ;)

Amquel is an additive that removes ammonia. I used when I kept FW cichlid tanks. It is a stop-gap when ammonia spikes up. I don't know how hardy neon tetras are but they probably won't sustain increased time in a tank that has ammonia.

The nitrogen cycle applies to FW along with reef tanks.

Good luck, bro.

The tetra's will release ammonia (NH3) as part of it's waste. Since there is no bacteria to convert that to nitrite (NO2) then nitrate (NO3), the fish will susceptible to the too most toxic nutrients, NH3 and NO2.

You can get Amquel at any Petsmart and Petco.

Sorry those aren't neon tetras. I have no idea what they are. Anyhow you can use their dead carcasses to cycle your wife's new pico reef.
